About Me... a mini Autobiography

I was born in Jackson, CA to Mr. & Mrs. Charles Beshears on December 26, 1964.  I am 1 of 7 children; second born to be exact.  My Father's relatives originated from Arkansas, which accounts for the slight "southern" twang in my voice.  I began to sing at about the age of 5... Elvis Presley bein' a major influence in my vocal development.  But, I was a "closet singer".  I didn't know that my Mama was listenin' at my door though, until one day a friend of hers asked me to sing for her.  I told her I couldn't sing, an' then she "spilled the beans" about Mama's evesdroppin' and that she had heard me too.  With a little encouragement I started singin'.  "Heartbreak Hotel" was one of the first songs I sang in front of my family.  By the age of 10 I taught myself to play guitar with the aid of a hand drawn chord chart from my cousin Gene.  The first song I played was "House Of The Risin' Sun" which was considerably harder than a regular beginners song... but I was detirmined.  I learned it in 2 weeks, during which I almost gave up 2 times.  I played an' sang on an' off throughout grade school.  My first performance in front of a large audience was during an 8th grade school play presented by Sutter Creek Elementary.  I was cast as a mean "magical" cowboy named Bad Penny who ate children.  I got the part because some of the lines were to be sang... to the tune of "Frankie & Johnnie" (Elvis' version).  As soon as I opened my mouth an' belted out those lines, the teacher said, "you have the part".  When the play opened there was a big turnout... everyone remembered their lines and all went well.  Afterwards, my big sister (Louise) ran up to me and said, "Dale, didn't you see what was happening"?  I told her I didn't know what she was talkin' about.  She then told me that whenever I sang there was a standin' ovation... I was too wrapped up in the play to notice.

I continued to play guitar and sing during my years at Amador High.  I developed a sort of followin'... girls would run up to me and beg for a song.  They'd usually pick some tear jerker an' they would end up ballin'.  It was great.  I scored as one of the top students on the S.A.T. test but was flunkin' many of my classes.  My teachers were baffled, an' scheduled a Teacher/Parent conference to find out why.  My Mama (Priscilla... yes, Priscilla) an' I showed up for the "conference", but many of the teachers didn't.  Those that did come seemed confused... especially when they asked me, "Why are you failing, Dale"?  I said, "I'm bored...", an' then the meeting seemed to dissolve... literally.  One teacher (the AG teacher) sat quietly as things sort of broke up.  Finally, he looked at me an' said, "Can I go now?", to which I replied, "Sure... I think it's safe".  I ended up gettin' booted out of Amador High an' into Independence High for my last year.  I had blown one whole year of High School an' had a whole year to do, so I did two years in one (by the grace of God).  I came to know Jesus Christ as my Savior an' he helped me put my priorities in order.  I earned some credit working outside the school for a County project called, "Positive Strokes For Little Folks".  It involved singin', playin' guitar, and pupeteerin' for disabled & regular grade school kids.  Everythin' was geared towards teachin' positive morals, an' the kids loved it.  When I graduated, I was asked to make a recordin' of me performin' the songs so the kids could continue to sing with me... a woman by the name of Jackie Davis headed up the project.  After graduatin' I continued to develop my talents.  I attended church an' sang regularly in the choir.  I was later part of a men's group called, The Men's Chorus", which traveled around the county singin' at different churches, with me bein' one of the lead singers.  We once sang at the funeral of one of the Main Church Elders... it was televised via satellite.  I sang, "Peace In The Valley" with the group as my "Jordanaire" backup. By the time this had taken place 16 years had passed since graduation.
